The Background
3.6 million children live in poverty in the UK - 28% of all children.
Children in poverty experience disadvantage and lack of opportunity.
They are denied good health, education, housing and social activities.
They often have low self esteem. Child poverty also affects
the life chances of subsequent generations.
The UK government aims to halve child poverty by 2010 and eradicate it by
2020. The Church must bring pressure to bear on the government to ensure it
achieves this goal!
Creator God, in whose image we are all made,
enable us to see that each person has an equal place in your plan. We pray
for families facing the chasm of poverty, spirits daunted and dimmed by
unemployment, burdened by debt, and opportunities but a dream. We pray for
the lifting of crippling poverty so that the children of today and tomorrow
may fly on soaring wings, with dreams strengthened into reality. Together
with those in authority, may we in our churches, our homes and our work have
the imagination to satisfy the priorities of the poor, and bring security,
health and laughter to the children of our nation. Amen |
